Naoshima ferries & passenger boats

You can reach Naoshima via the mainland ports of Uno (Okayama Prefecture) and Takamatsu (Kagawa Prefecture). There are two ports on Naoshima: the larger Miyanoura Port on the west side, and the smaller Naoshima Port in Honmura on the east side. Miyanoura Port connects to both Takamatsu and Uno via both large car ferries and high-speed passenger boats. There is only limited passenger boat service between the port in Honmura and Uno.

Benesse House free shuttle bus

Benesse House offers free shuttle bus service connecting the museums on the southern end of the island, most of which are inaccessible by car or bicycle. You can park your car or bike at Tsutsuji-so or Chichu Art Museum and hop on the shuttle bus, which stops at all of the museums. Tsutsuji-so is also a transfer point between the shuttle bus and the town bus. The shuttle bus does not run when Chichu Art Museum is closed (usually Mondays)—check the calendar.

Naoshima rental bicycles

There are several ways to rent e-bikes on Naoshima. If you are staying on Naoshima, before you make a reservation at a bike shop, check with your lodging to see if they have e-bikes available for guests.

The two bike shops below (both located at Miyanoura Port) accept online reservations:

You can request a free helmet at the bike shop, and we do recommend helmets as there is no hospital on Naoshima.

Naoshima rental cars

There are two options for renting cars on Naoshima. You will need a Japanese driver’s license or an international driver’s permit in order to rent a car on the island.

Naoshima taxis

In general, it’s difficult to get a taxi on Naoshima—there are only a few on the island, and in the busy season they’re usually booked during the day for charter services. We do not recommend relying on taxis if at all possible.

There are two taxi companies with cars based on Naoshima:

  • Nissin Taxi – 087-882-2424
  • Okawa Taxi – 087-851-3356

English-language phone support is very limited.

Nissin Taxi also has a web form, and they told us that they accept English-language charter bookings (not single rides) using that form. Response time may be delayed; we recommend booking a charter taxi several months ahead of time.

Teshima ferries & passenger boats

Traveling from/to Uno Port (or Shodoshima)

Teshima has two ports on the north side of the island: Ieura Port (west) and Karato Port (east). A regular service alternating between slow car ferries and high-speed passenger boats connects both ports on Teshima to Uno Port (Okayama Prefecture) to the west, as well as to Tonosho Port on Shodoshima island, which is further east.

There is also high-speed boat service between Ieura Port on Teshima and Takamatsu (Kagawa Prefecture). Very infrequently, this service also stops at Naoshima Port (Honmura).

Teshima buses

Teshima bus service is very limited, and priority is given to local residents. If possible, we recommend renting e-bikes, or exploring on foot.

Teshima bicycles

E-bikes are without a doubt the most enjoyable way to explore Teshima. There are several bicycle rental shops on Teshima. These shops in Ieura accept online reservations:

The Teshima Tourism Association has a stand of rental bicycles available at Ieura Port, but they are first-come, first served with no reservations accepted, so we recommend making a reservation with another shop. There’s also a small bike shop at Karato Port that accepts reservations by phone only.

All bicycle rentals include a free helmet, which you are strongly encouraged to wear—Teshima is very hilly and has no hospitals.

Teshima rental cars

There are two car rental shops on Teshima, but only one rents to non-Japanese speaking drivers: Teshima SS (Wakou Gas Station) (formerly Akeda) accepts online reservations. You need to have either a Japanese driver’s license or an international driver’s permit to be able to rent a car.

Setouchi Tuk-Tuk is a new option on Teshima. Their zippy little three-seater vehicles are a nice idea on the island’s narrow roads. We’ve heard that some travelers have had trouble getting a response from them however. (If you do use them, let us know how it goes!)

Teshima taxis

Teshima has only one taxi based on the island—a fact that’s proudly emblazoned on the side of the car. Akiyama Taxi can be booked by phone only at 0879-68-2111. Mr. Akiyama’s English ability is limited, so having someone who speaks Japanese make the reservation is recommended.

Kankake Taxi, based on neighboring Shodoshima, can also provide charter taxi services on Teshima. They have an English website.

Inujima passenger boats

There is a passenger boat running between Naoshima (Miyanoura Port), Teshima (Ieura Port), and Inujima. This boat runs only three times per day and can get crowded on weekends and Mondays.

From March 1 to November 30 each year, high speed boat services operate on everyday (except Tuesdays).
From December 1 to the end of February each year, high speed boat services operate on Mondays, Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays.
The boat runs in accordance with the Teshima Art Museum and Inujima Seirensho Art Museum calendar.
If a museum is closed, the boat will not stop at that island. If both museums are closed, the boat will not run.
When the schedule of either museum is changed, the boat’s timetable will reflect accordingly.
If you purchase a ticket between Naoshima and Inujima, you cannot disembark at Teshima and re-board later on the same ticket.

There is a more regular passenger boat between Hoden Port (Okayama) and Inujima. Please plan carefully if you are traveling via Hoden Port. There is no train station at Hoden Port, so a bus or taxi connection is required. Taxis must be arranged ahead of time if you are departing from Hoden Port. Note also that the bus between Hoden Port and Okayama Station runs on weekends only.

Ride-sharing is also supported and may save you some money.
